Wednesday Oct 7th - La Grange, to Del Rio

Stopped in San Antonio and had an amazing burger at Fatty's, the were ranked #18 in the August 2009, Texas Monthly Magazine.  Should have been ranked #1.

Stayed at La Quinta in Del Rio

My bike was dirty for the first time!! And of course little brother had to take a picture of it! (Bratt!!)

Thursday Oct 8 - Del Rio to Marathon

We passed the Pecos river and it was amazing.  We had to turn around just to stop and take pictures.

Stopped at Judge Roy Beans just down the road.

Stopped at a local convenience store and had a six pack with the owner and visited with the Swans guy.  Kenny & Laurie raced leaving leaving the store with the store store owner & Mr. Swan guy as witnesses...I wouldn't tell who won! Ricky just shook his head.

Traveled south into Big Bend on hwy 385 to the Park Headquarters, then looped back north on hwy 118 to Alpine.  It took us a LONG time to make this loop.

Stayed at Ramada Inn, Alpine

Friday October 9 - Marathon

We left Marathon for a day of sight-seeing heading west on hwy 90.  We stopped and had breakfast at a little Mexican food restaurant just outside of Marfa. From there, we traveled south on hwy 87 to Presido.  Following Laurie we ended up in Mexico...oops.

After turning turning around, we followed 'River Road' hwy 170 along the Texas/Mexico boarder for the day.  This road follows the Rio Grande River for a good portion of the trip.  We stopped to admire the river.  The Mountains were unbelievable!!  When we pulled over to admire the view, sitting on the ground was a beautiful set of horns shed from a deer. We carried them home and gave them to Heather.

We stopped mid-day in Study Butte to gas up. We continued around and picked up hwy 385 back to Marathon where we made a quick stop to see the 'bugs' crossing the road.

We stopped at the Gage Hotel and had buffalo burgers for dinner.  They were rated #11 in Texas Monthly, they were good, but not that good.  After dinner, heading back to Alpine, we stopped to see the Marathon Lights and froze our butts off!!  We stopped outside of town to see the stars and listen to the quiet.  We took pictures of the beautiful sky lights but they only showed up as black pictures.

Saturday October 10 - Alpine to Ozona

We left Alpine and headed west on hwy 90 to Marfa then north on hwy 17 to Fort Davis. In Fort Davis we took hwy 118  where we visited Fort Davis State Park, Indian Lodge State Park, and visited McDonalds Observatory (the highest paved road in the State of Texas) and then headed north to Interstate 10.

We headed east on I10 where Kenny, low on fuel, disappeared in Roosevelt while Ricky & I parked in the middle of the freeway and waited.

Stayed at: Best Western Ozona

RAIN!

Sunday October 11 - Ozona to La Grange

Had a horrible breakfast at the hotel!! We met another traveling biker who had tried to start his bike while the alarm was still engaged.  We understood it was going to take approximately $100 after his HOG discount to get his bike trailered to the nearest Harley dealership in Boerne.  We were glad we weren't him!!  But we did get lucky, the rain started as we pulled out of the hotel and drowned us for the rest of the trip.  We left Kenny in Flatonia while he headed to Houston and we headed south to La Grange.
