Materials needed:

Please Note: One 55 gallon biological filter will clean up to 1000 gallons of water. I have a 3500 gallon pond and use 3 biological filters.

  • 1- 55 gallon plastic barrel (Be sure the barrel you use has NOT had toxic chemicals in it. Toxic Chemicals can contaminate your pond and Kill your fish and plants!!)

  • 3 cu. ft- of washed 1" gravel or 3- 5 gallon buckets

  • 1- 5'x 5' mesh screen (also known as shade cloth)

  • 4'- 4" PVC pipe

  • 1" Heavy Duty Garden hose  (measure the distance from the barrel to the submerged pump and add another 3' to determine hose length)

  • 1- Milk crate

  • 2- 2" male threaded to female smooth couplings

  • 2- 2" hose clamps

  • 1- 1" PVC "T"

  • 4- 2" rubber gaskets

  • 2- 2" PVC nuts

  • 1- 2" PVC valve or a 2" brass Ballcock Valve.

  • 1- 2" PVC 90 (elbow)

  • 2" PVC pipe (Measure the distance from the filter outlet hole to the pond water return, and add another 6")

  • PVC Glue

  • Optional : Shade screen, colored green, to cover your filter (to hide the filter), 4 Cinder blocks, 3'x 3' 3/4 inch plywood for base
